TOP 10 WEDDING VENUES IN SCOTLAND

You’ve been planning your wedding for months, with every last detail accounted for. . .and then you see the weather forecast. Rain on your wedding day! You’ve dreamt of sunshine and blue skies, but rain doesn’t have to ruin your big day. Here are my 5 tips for dealing with rain on your wedding day. You can still enjoy yourselves, and get amazing photos, without getting wet!
If you’re still at the early stages of wedding planning where you’re choosing your venue, then think about the inside! It’s easy to go for a venue that has stunning views and great outside space, but it’s worth having a think about what happens if you’re not able to get outside to enjoy those views.
If everyone’s stuck inside, is there enough space to take your group photos whilst the rest of your guests enjoy the Drinks Reception? The venue staff might need to get your Ceremony Room ready for the Wedding Meal, so having an extra space away from everyone can be invaluable.
And then there’s the photos of the Bride & Groom to consider. These Couple’s Photos are going to take pride of place in an album or on the walls of your home for years to come, so if your venue has a bit of character and charm, so much the better!
If I know the forecast isn’t looking great then the first thing I’ll do upon arriving at a venue is to identify some spots where we could take some cool portraits without going outside. We make sure to bring plenty of flashes and lights so we can make any space look amazing!
If you’re having the ceremony in a church then that provides the ideal venue to take some rainy day photos rather than go outside in the wet!
If you’ve still to choose your venue, have a look at our list of the Top 10 Wedding Venues in Scotland – most are perfect for Scotland’s less than ideal weather!
With some venues, traipsing across grass is just unavoidable. So one of my top tips for rain on your wedding day is the importanance of wearing the right footwear! Even if you’ve spent a month’s wages on the perfect pair of Jimmy Choos, I always advise brides to pack a spare pair of shoes that they wouldn’t mind getting a little dirty. These could be a cheap pair of heels, some trainers or even wellies!
If your chosen venue has a more rustic feel to it, then you could always incorporate the wellies into your decor!
It is an obvious point to make, but if you think the weather might not be ideal on your wedding day then you’ll need to organise umbrellas. A lot of umbrellas!
Think about all the times that you and your guests will have no choice but to be outside, whether that be going from the car into the church, or going from a main building over to a marquee. If all your guests need to make that journey, it’s a thoughtful touch to have umbrellas at the ready!
And you can always incorporate your unbrellas into your Bridal Party photos!
You still want photos outside, but you’ve spent ages on your hair and makeup and don’t fancy getting soaked? Then we need to seek out some shelter!
Bandstands and gazebos are the go-to location when you have rain on your wedding day:
These structures are obviously quite photogenic and are great whatever the weather. But what if your venue isn’t blessed with a gazebo? Well, your photographer needs to get a little creative!
At a recent wedding it was pouring all day, but our bride & groom really wanted photos outside. We noticed a carport just outside the venue. It wasn’t the most glamorous location, but with some clever positioning and lighting we made a feature of the rain, and made it look like the couple were out braving the elements!
There comes a point in the day where you may want to stop being cautious, throw that umbrella away, and go out in the rain! If that sounds like the crazy kind of thing you might do, then we’ll make it worth your while. By lighting up both you and the rain, we’ll get you a photo that may well end up being your favourite shot of the entire wedding day.
And remember, no matter the weather, focus on what’s important and keep smiling!
